Let’s talk birth control pills. The good news is that there are a lot of options to choose from. But not every option works for every body… there are many attributes to consider.
Let’s start with the basics. Traditional birth control pills typically contain two hormones: estrogen and progestin. While effective for many women, there are factors to consider for some women including health history and personal preference.
Beyond traditional birth control pills, there are estrogen-free birth control pills. These little wonders may work well for many women and have characteristics that are worth talking about with your doctor. Here’s why it may be a good option for you.
Less is More
Today, many women make a conscious choice to put fewer hormones in their bodies, whether it is the foods they eat or the medicines they take. That’s why, an estrogen-free birth control pill like Slynd® (drospirenone), that contains the progestin drospirenone, is an option for women who want or need to avoid estrogen.1
This means you can avoid the added worry of estrogen and still have efficacy to prevent pregnancy when you take it correctly.1
Manageable Bleeding
“That time of the month” may not be a favorite topic of conversation, but it’s an important one to have, especially surrounding birth control. After all, when you take hormonal birth control, it affects your entire reproductive system, including your menstrual cycle. With Slynd, women are taking a hormonal pill for 24 days so many users experience lighter bleeding or no bleeding at all.a,b,c,d A manageable period? Yes, please!
- a. In clinical studies, 3.5% of patients dropped out due to bleeding irregularities.
- b. Based on subject diaries from 4 clinical trials of Slynd, 64% of females experienced unscheduled bleeding at Cycle 1. This percentage decreased to 40% by cycle 13.
- c. No bleeding or spotting days reported during entire exposure cycle.
- d. A total of 91 out of 2593 subjects discontinued Slynd® due to menstrual bleeding disorders including metrorrhagia, menstrual irregular, vaginal hemorrhage, menorrhagia, uterine hemorrhage, and amenorrhea.
24-Hour Missed Pill Window
Slynd has a 24-hour missed pill window. This means that even if you miss a pill, you can still depend on Slynd to do its job and prevent pregnancy.e
It is important to set an alarm and take your birth control at the same time every day, but we know sometimes life gets in the way. If you miss a pill, take it as soon as you remember and then take the next pill at your regular time.
e. Slynd® tablets must be taken every day at about the same time of the day so that the interval between two tablets is always 24 hours.
Breastfeeding Friendly
For new parents who are breastfeeding, estrogen-free pills like Slynd may be a suitable choice for those who are looking for reliable birth control.1
Neglible amounts of drospirenone are excreted in the breast milk. Thus, at therapeutic doses of Slynd®, no effects on breastfed newborns/infants are anticipated. In general, no adverse effects have been found on milk production or on the health growth, or development of the infant with use of POPs.
You may be asking, “how do I know if Slynd is right for me?”
Everybody (and every body) is different, with different needs and preferences for birth control. Knowledge is power and being aware of the options available allows you to navigate your contraceptive journey with confidence and empowerment. Of course, if you’re looking to have fewer hormones in your birth control or some of the other factors discussed above, talk to your doctor about Slynd®.
